According to a statement issued by the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, the carcasses of these birds—classified under Appendix I of CITES—were immediately incinerated to limit the spread of a possible zoonotic disease.
A statement from the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF), signed on January 9, 2026, informs the national and international community of the discovery, on the same day, of 43 carcasses of African white-backed vultures at a site known as Plateau Daniel in Martap, within the Martap subdivision, Vina Division, Adamawa Region.
In order to prevent any potential spread, should it prove to be a zoonosis, Jules Doret Ndongo ordered the incineration of the said vultures. The causes of their deaths remain unknown.
African white-backed vultures are listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). They are strictly protected species and are prohibited from exploitation or hunting.
As the causes of death are still unknown, the Minister has ordered investigations by local services and the gendarmerie brigade. These immediate investigations are intended to determine the causes of what he himself described as an “ecological disaster.” The statement recalls that “the Minister reaffirms the government’s determination to ensure the protection and preservation of forest and wildlife species, in accordance with the national forestry regulations in force and the international commitments undertaken by the President of the Republic, Head of State.”
