The Minister of Transport has officially alerted populations in Cameroon’s North and Far North Regions about a significant dust plume originating from the Sahara Desert and currently moving toward the country.
According to the Department of National Meteorology, the phenomenon is driven by strong northwesterly winds averaging 10 meters per second, with temperatures ranging between 35°C and 40°C. These climatic conditions are expected to be observed on Monday, 16 February 2026, between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., particularly facilitating the dust’s entry through the Logone-and-Chari Division in the Far North Region.
Authorities warn that the dust plume could extend beyond the initially affected areas to reach the Adamawa and East Regions. The situation is expected to persist until Thursday, 19 February 2026, potentially impacting key sectors such as transportation, agriculture, and public health.
In response, residents are strongly advised to limit outdoor activities, wear protective masks and goggles when necessary, drive cautiously due to reduced visibility, keep doors and windows closed, stay properly hydrated, and regularly monitor official weather updates.
Updates will be available via CRTV broadcasts, the Department of National Meteorology’s official Facebook and Twitter pages, its official website, and the Meteo Cameroon mobile application available on the Play Store.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the public to comply with precautionary measures to minimize risks.
